← The Imaginal Act, thirty days

Week 4 · Compound · Day 26 of 30

Let a system carry it

Today's intent (planned)

Choose one step you have carried by willpower and hand it to a system: a default, a reminder, a checklist or an agent.

The practice

  1. Set today's look-for in reality/log/<today>.md.
  2. Look back over three weeks. Which step slipped again and again? The look-for, the evening entry, the rep, the weekly seal?
  3. Choose one system for it. A recurring calendar event with the day log's path in it. A checklist on the wall. A note on your phone's lock screen. With the plugin, a daily reminder in your own calendar that says "run my loop" starts the reality-loop skill; the plugin never schedules anything itself.
  4. Decide how you will know it works: "the evening entry happens on 5 of 7 nights."
  5. Write it under ## Systems in reality.md, which is yours to edit, and in reality/systems.md with a review date. If it serves your aim, add it under - Systems to build: in reality/aims/<slug>.md (Studio: Bridges).

Why it works

Meaning

A system is a promise kept on your behalf on the days you cannot keep it yourself. Building it is a kindness to your future tired self. It frees your attention for the parts of the practice that need you: the scene, the meaning, the choice.

Mechanism

Willpower varies with sleep, stress and mood; defaults, cues and reminders do not. A system that removes one decision makes the action likelier to happen in a stable context, which is how habits form. Give it a measure and a review date, so you can tell whether it helps instead of assuming it does.

Tonight (reported)

Add an entry at the top of reality/witness.md, headed ### <today> <time> · rep or · win (Studio: Witness):

  • Happened (fact): The system you set up, and where it lives.
  • Meant (my meaning): What handing this off means to you.
  • Did (action): Only what is done.
  • Next (planned): The date you will review it.
  • Did it come? In the log: - Did it come: yes, no or not marked.
