Week 4 · Compound · Day 25 of 30
Repair a missed day
- 6 min

- Library: the meaning shelf
Today's intent (planned)
If you have missed a day, or several, come back with the smallest version, mark the gap honestly, and go on without a debt.
The practice
- Look at the gaps since day 1: days with no log, look-fors left unmarked, reps skipped. Just count them.
- Leave past entries as they are. The one edit to make: if a past look-for was never marked, add
- Did it come: not markedto that day's log, so it still counts as set. Do not write old entries from memory as if you had written them then. - Today, do the smallest version: one look-for, one rep at its tiny size, one line tonight.
- Write one correction about what made the gap: the time of day, the place, the size, a hard week. Put it in today's log as
- One correction: …(Studio: Today). - If you have missed nothing, read this anyway. You may need it later.
If what kept you away is heavy, such as illness, grief, or thoughts of harming yourself, put the practice down and reach out to a doctor, a crisis line or local emergency services. The practice will wait.
Why it works
Meaning
Coming back is part of the practice, not a failure of it. There is no debt to pay and no streak to mourn. You can greet the gap the way you would greet a friend who has been away: glad they are here. If the gap came from something hard, be gentle. It is allowed to take time.
Mechanism
In a field study of habit formation, missing a single opportunity did not measurably slow the habit; repetition over time is what counted. A gap is information about the plan, the environment or the pace. Kind, specific words name a next step you can take; a harsh verdict names none. Marking a gap as not marked keeps your tally honest instead of quietly dropping the misses.
Tonight (reported)
One line is enough tonight. Add an entry at the top of reality/witness.md, headed ### <today> <time> · rep or the kind that is truest (Studio: Witness):
- Happened (fact): One sentence about today.
- Meant (my meaning): Optional.
- Did (action): Only what is done.
- Next (planned): Tomorrow's smallest step.
- Did it come? In the log:
- Did it come: yes, noornot marked.
