← The Imaginal Act, thirty days

Week 1 · See · Day 05 of 30

The first look-for

Today's intent (planned)

Choose one thing to look for today, write it down before the day starts, and mark tonight whether it came. Hits and misses both count.

The practice

  1. Read your scene and your "I am" lines. One minute.
  2. Choose one look-for that a day could plausibly bring and that you would recognize: "a conversation about the book," "a moment I choose the chapter over my phone," "an offer of help." Make it specific enough that tonight the answer could be no.
  3. Write it first, before the day starts, in a new file reality/log/<today>.md (Studio: Today): the heading # <today>, then - Looking for: a conversation about the book and - Rehearsed the scene: yes.
  4. Go about your day. No straining, no hunting. From today on, every morning starts with this line.

Why it works

Meaning

A look-for can feel like a small conversation with your own life: a question asked in the morning and listened for all day. Whether what comes feels like a sign is yours to say. Keep the question light. The asking is the practice.

Mechanism

Setting an intention primes attention, so related things get noticed more often once you are looking. That is why look-fors seem to come true so often, and why they need honest bookkeeping. Writing the prediction first and recording misses with hits turns it into a fair test of your attention, never of your worth. One day shows nothing either way; read the tally over weeks.

Tonight (reported)

In reality/log/<today>.md, add - Did it come: yes, no or not marked. A no is a counted miss, not a failure.

If it came, add an entry at the top of reality/witness.md, headed ### <today> <time> · sign · primed, because you had set out to notice it. Something meaningful you were not looking for gets · sign · unprimed (Studio: Witness).

  • Happened (fact): What an outside observer could have seen.
  • Meant (my meaning): What it meant to you, in your words.
  • Did (action): What you already did in response, if anything.
  • Next (planned): What you intend to do.
  • Did it come? Already marked above: yes, no, or not marked.
