Week 3 · Witness · Day 18 of 30
A lesson day
- 8 min
- Evening loop
- Library: Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus
Today's intent (planned)
Take one thing that did not go as planned and turn it into one correction, without a verdict on yourself.
The practice
- Set today's look-for in
reality/log/<today>.md. - Find one miss from the last week: a no on a look-for, a skipped rep, a move past its date, a moment you would replay.
- Write it as an observer would. One sentence, no adjectives about yourself.
- Ask three questions. The plan: too big, wrong time? The environment: a missing cue, too much friction? The pace: too much at once? Note what was outside your control, too.
- Write one correction you can try tomorrow, as an if-then if it fits.
- Put it in the log as
- One correction: …(Studio: Today).
Why it works
Meaning
A miss can be a teacher that asks only for attention. You can let it be information instead of a judgment of who you are. There is freedom in saying plainly: this did not work, here is what I will try. Then you let the day close.
Mechanism
Separating what is up to you from what is not, then reviewing the day, is an old practice behind modern reappraisal and after-action reviews. Locating the cause in the plan, the environment or the pace points at something you can change; a verdict on your character points nowhere. One correction at a time shows which change helped.
Tonight (reported)
Add an entry at the top of reality/witness.md, headed ### <today> <time> · lesson (Studio: Witness):
- Happened (fact): The miss, in one observer's sentence.
- Meant (my meaning): What it taught you.
- Did (action): Only what is done.
- Next (planned): The correction, and when you will try it.
- Did it come? In the log:
- Did it come: yes, noornot marked.
